Cheap and Easy, Like a Politician…The “Forks Over Knives” Food Plan

They mean surgical knives.

The book is a #1 New York Times Bestseller. There’s also a cookbook and two documentaries. I’ve read/watched them all.

A doctor’s office, literally two miles away, emailed me because i am their local contact for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and they wanted to reach out to say they’d be happy to be a part of anything i plan to do.  I went to their office (i’m a medical marketer on the side so i’m an expert at visiting doctor’s offices) and we shared information.  They’re brochure mentioned many books that i have read, such as The Blood Sugar Solution, etc.  Then they mentioned the Forks Over Knives documentary.

Then i saw it at Whole Foods and Barnes & Noble.  I thought to myself, ”I’ve got to see what this is about.” So i downloaded it on Tivo.

This is not a diet thing…although you’ll probably lose weight if you’re smart about it.

It’s a health thing… eating mostly whole, plant-based foods to avoid disease.

And i take it seriously- all this talk about your heart, arteries, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and open heart surgery where they take a tool and literally saw your chest open and pull open your ribs to expose your heart.  Why do I take it seriously?

Because my beloved father had all of the above, so i know it’s for real.

He had the stents and his leg cut open so they could steal a vein and use it for his heart.  Okay…I’m done with the gore.

Now i’ve tried a lot of crazy fads for fun, like Atkins, HCG & Biggest Loser. No, i’m not overweight. Not really.  But i like to educate myself on the subject of “health” and the body.  I have great will power when it comes to food.  (Drink, not so much ;) )

I’ve starved for 23 days on HCG and ate only protein for 9 weeks on Atkins.

And so far i’ve been trying the vegan lifestyle for 3 weeks.

Is this another fad? Who knows.  But i didn’t DECIDE to go on it.  After watching the documentary, you believe these two doctors and want to naturally adopt their philosophy.  And it seems to make good sense.  And they’ve done honorable studies.

I was dizzy on HCG.  I had no energy on Atkins.  I feel clean eating mostly whole plant-based foods.  So far, i haven’t missed steaks, hamburgers, cheese pizza, yellow scrambled eggs or a tall glass of cow’s milk.  But i’m sure i will sooner or later.  And i’ll have some egg whites when the time comes.  I prefer them.  And i’ll eat pizza and chow down a cheeseburger like a man.  But i have to say, i think this philosophy will stick.  If i don’t get sick of beans.

I’ve only lost about 4 lbs, but like i said- it’s not about the weight.  I picture reversing the plaque buildup in my arteries from all my years of hot lunch as a kid, all the fast food as a teen, and all the Chantilly whipped cream, half n half and ice cream i’ve enjoyed in my adult life.

When i’m 70, i don’t want to be sitting in a remote recliner watching TV every waking moment.  I want to be skiing in France and biking thru Italy with my children someday.  Because i probably won’t be able to afford to go any earlier!  And i’d like to avoid surgery if i can.

I urge you to watch it, read it, try it.  You don’t have to be super strict in the beginning.  Just try familiarizing yourself with different recipes.  This was a challenge for me, as i didn’t really have a lot to lean on.  Adopt a different mindset.  Add more vegan meals to your week.

I tend to lean more towards these two farm boys who became highly educated doctors and ran studies with huge data then our government whose decisions are affected by the dairy and beef industries.  The very fact that our school lunch room has such strict non-compete laws speaks mountains.

But that’s just me.

And the meals are cheap and easy, like a politician.
